The Three Parts of the ADI Training

Part 1 -
Instructor Training Test

Part One consists of two components: a Theory Test and a Hazard Perception Test.

Part 2 -
Instructor Training Test

There are five elements to the Approved Driving Instructor Part Two Training Test: an eye-sight test, demonstrating driving ability, show me/tell me questions, car manoeuvres and independent driving.

Part 3 -
ADI Instructional Ability Test

The final test measures your ability to give effective instructions and pass on knowledge to pupils professionally in a client-centred way.

Part 1 -
Instructor Training Test

Part One consists of two components: a Theory Test and a Hazard Perception Test.

Theory Test

The Theory Test totals 100 questions, split into four sections. For each question, there will be four possible answers.

The questions focus on the following areas:

  • Correct road procedure.
  • Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, and mechanical knowledge.
  • Driving tests, disabilities, and law.
  • Publications and instructional techniques.

The Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception Test is designed to test your ability to identify potential hazards that may occur when driving.

You will be given fourteen video clips to watch. Each clip features everyday road scenes containing at least one developing hazard. One clip will feature two developing hazards.

One Direction Driving School’s ADI driving Trainers will help you pass both exams with helpful, tips and instructor techniques. All resources are supplied by One Direction Driving School, including books, CDs, and a hazard awareness video.

Part 2 -
Instructor Training Test

There are five elements to the Approved Driving Instructor Part Two Training Test: an eye-sight test, demonstrating driving ability, show me/tell me questions, car manoeuvres and independent driving.

Part Two lasts for approximately one hour.

Eye-sight Test

The eye-sight test consists of reading a number plate from a distance of 26.5 metres or 27.5 metres for old number plates.

‘Show me’ ‘Tell me’ Questions

The show me/tell me questions consist of five vehicle safety questions to allow you to demonstrate knowledge of basic safety tasks.

Demonstrate the following competencies to the examiner:

  • Expert handling of the controls.
  • Use of correct road procedure.
  • Anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking appropriate action.
  • Sound judgement of distance, speed, and timing
  • Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users.
  • Driving in an environmentally friendly manner.
  • Driving in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways and dual carriageways.
  • Ability to perform an emergency stop.
  • Reversing your vehicle.

The examiner will also request that you perform two of the following exercises:

  • Parallel Park at the side of the road.
  • Reverse into a parking bay and drive out.
  • Drive into a parking bay and reverse out.
  • Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for approximately two car lengths, and re-join the traffic.

Independent Driving

To demonstrate the ability to drive independently, you will have to drive for twenty minutes following either:

  • Directions from a Satnav,
    Or,
  • Traffic signs

The examiner will inform you of which they would prefer you to follow. In the case of the satnav, your examiner will input details for you. You will not be allowed to follow directions from your own satnav. Going off route your test result will not be affected if you take a wrong turn unless you make a fault in the process. The examiner will help you get back to the route if you do.

Part 3 -
ADI Instructional Ability Test

The final test measures your ability to give effective instructions and pass on knowledge to pupils professionally in a client-centred way.

The process of the assessment is laid out as follows:

The examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting approximately 45 minutes to one of your pupils.

Your pupil must drive for at least 40 minutes of the lesson.

At the start of the lesson, discuss the lesson’s goals and risk management with your pupil.

Give your pupil no more than three minutes to reflect on their performance at the end of the lesson.

The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the national driver and rider training standards.

What our ADIs’ say about their training:

“After deciding to re-train as a Driving Instructor, I researched who to go with and settled upon One Direction. Best decision I made, throughout the process I have felt supported every step of the way. The training was methodical and detailed which enabled me to pass all stages and qualify as an ADI. I would highly recommend One Direction to anyone looking to become a Driving Instructor.”

– Liam

“Can’t speak highly enough about the professionalism of this Driving School. Michael is undoubtedly the font of all knowledge when it comes to driver coaching. He and Liam have, together, built a proven platform for both prospective ADI’s and Learners to achieve their goals. I trained with a well-known national Driving School for my ADI exams but couldn’t pass Part 3 until I had the support that One Direction gave me. Truly incredible what you guys are doing, keep it up!”

– Danny

“I started training to become an ADI with Michael at One Direction just over 18 months ago. The continued support and expert guidance given to me by Michael has been second to none from day dot. The support I have had throughout the team at One Direction, especially Liam, has also been amazing, all of which has helped me get to where I am and to pass my final part 3 exam today. All in all, a great, expert and continued supportive training approach. Thank you.”
