Why Become A Driving Instructor In Chelmsford?

One of the biggest reasons people become driving instructors in Chelmsford is the commute to London. Many people want to leave their London-based jobs and get back their time. They don’t want to spend half an hour on the A12 to Shenfield to catch a train, or take direct trains from Chelmsford station to Liverpool Street, which can take upwards of 45 minutes on busy mornings.

When you become a driving instructor, it brings your life back under your control, and you don’t have to give up so much of your day. Once approved, you decide what hours you work.

A Large Market To Specialise In

Chelmsford is the largest urban area in Essex, outside of Southend and Basildon, and provides a large pool of potential students to draw from.  Many driving instructors source clients from various institutions in the region, including Anglia Ruskin students, Broomfield Hospital care workers, and other major employers like E2V. Thousands of new homes are also planned at Chelmsford Garden Community in the city’s north-east, which will add further demand in the future.

These developments mean Chelmsford has a fairly deep customer base. There are many opportunities to teach new learners, young and old. You also have the opportunity to choose a niche targeting specific types of students in your marketing.

Teach On Roads You Already Know

If you live in Chelmsford, you probably already know the city’s layout. Because of this, you’re in a great position to help students become familiar with the one-way system on Moulsham Street, or teach them how to use the slip roads onto the A12. You can also show them to navigate the ever-busy Army and Navy roundabout.

What The Job Gives You

If you become a driving instructor in Chelmsford, expect to receive the following benefits:

  • Self-employment with independence to choose the amount of responsibility you take on
  • Hours that suit you (full-time, in the evenings, or weekends), and the work that can be scaled up and down according to your schedule
  • Progression later onto Pass Plus or different qualifications

Working Out What You Could Earn

How much you can earn depends on several things:

  1. The number of hours that you can teach
  2. Your running costs for your car, including insurance and fuel
  3. Any franchise fees
  4. How in demand you are

We can talk to you about what you’re likely to earn in person if you’d like, so get in touch with our team.

Who Is Eligible To Become A Driving Instructor In Chelmsford?

You are eligible to become a driving instructor in Chelmsford if you are over the age of 21 and have held a full car driving licence for three years. You also need to pass an enhanced DBS check and be assessed as a fit and proper person.

How To Become An Approved Driving Instructor

Becoming an approved driving instructor follows a clear, structured process, though it takes commitment to pass all three DVSA tests:

Part 1: theory and hazard perception

Part 2: practical driving test to a higher standard than a regular learner test

Part 3: assessment to gauge your ability to teach a real student

To be eligible as a driving instructor in the UK, you need to be at least 21 years old. You also need to have held a full car driving licence for at least three years. You also need to be judged a fit and proper person and submit to an enhanced DBS check.

Worth knowing: once you pass Part 1, you have two years to pass both Part 2 and Part 3, or you’ll need to start the whole process again, so it’s worth planning your training around that window.

For details, see our main ADI training page. For the official eligibility criteria, you can also check gov.uk’s guidance on becoming an ADI.
